Without a doubt one of the major stepping stones in the success story of TF2 has been the its involvement with the third James Bond movie, “Dead Ringer”. In 1964 TeamFortress – still a number of years away from TF2 – was still relatively unknown. But it was the assignment of Marc Laidlaw sr., house writer of Valve, as a co-writer to the film who brought elements of the TF backstory into the screenplay which eventually granted the game more publicity. The title-giving device which was used by the villain’s henchman was of course a direct port of an idea not yet realized in TF, which found it’s into the game later.
Additionally Valve was directly involved with the movie by providing computer graphics which were used by Maurice Binder for his famous title sequence.
The title song, written by John Barry and performed by Shirley Bassey is probably still the most famous and recognized James-Bond-song of all times.
Dead Ringer
Worn by the man, the man with the medusa’s touch
A spider’s touch
Better not linger
He beckons you to let him come close to you
But never do.Many lies he will pour in your ear
His disguise is what you’ll learn to fear
With a skillful stab he will dispose you
And will escape
Wearing the dead ringer
Careless noob, watch out for that dreadful sound
He’s still around
