In 1969 the Hollies released their version of the popular ballad by Bobby Scott and Bob Russell, “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother”. Initially intended to use the original lyrics the Hollies eventually decided to change the lyrics and came up with a TF-based theme for the song. While it has never become known what prompted that change rumor has it that it was piano player Elton John, a huge fan of the game, who came up with the idea and talked the Hollies into that change. Also unconfirmed is the rumor that John wrote the lyrics.
While the Hollies’ version of the song is beloved amongst TF-fans to this day it was much to the Hollies’ chagrin that the song never saw much commercial success, while Neil Diamond scored a huge hit with his version only a year later, which used the original lyrics.
The road is long from the respawn to the frontline
No teleporter in sight and so I have to walk
Cos I’m strong but so slow – yeah
I’m a Heavy – Slow but tougherSo while I walk I look out for scouts and spies
Which might prey on me - I know they like doing so
But I’m prepared I will not give them a chance
I’m a Heavy - Slow but tougherBut when I arrive there, after all this walking
I will rise Sasha and let it do the talking
And let it tell a sweet bedtime story
A “sleep well” to our foesThe road was long and battle my sole reward
But I make them run like hell, spank them well
With one last push I help to cap the point
I’m a Heavy – Slow but tougher
