Remember that remark in my article „Upcoming Sniper update“ about the rule of thumb with three snipers, one usually being good, one mediocre and one bad?
It’s actually worse with engineers.
Each time I start a map like dustbowl on defense and I see three engineers on my team my mind is always filled with dreadful anticipation. And sure enough most of the time my teammates from the engineering profession don’t let me down. Three level one sentries (either at least one in a silly spot or two next to each other … or both), perhaps a dispenser or two (also lvl 1 of course), probably 3 TPs entrances but not a single exit and three engineers running around chasing after the same ammo crate at map start.
Gates open and sentries and dispensers are usually wiped out in a heartbeat.
There are different scenarios on what happens from that point on, ranging from a cycle of reenactments throughout the rest of the game to suddenly having no engineer at all because all three wimped out (switching to snipers? ). Sometimes things still work out, miraculously. Sometimes not. Much depends on the rest of the team.
But what is it with those specimens of engineers? My theory is that Valve integrated a hidden feature to the engineer-class: Shared intelligence. I suspect engineers share a finite amount of game intelligence. The more engys, the less intelligence for each of them. Think about it. It would explain a lot. Could be exponential, since the drop of intelligence between 2 and 3 is much larger than between 1 and 2. I’m not sure 4 engineers could wipe their own asses without help.
"Engineer is credit to team".
Engineers, prove worthy of that sentiment ...
