I played the update yesterday for a couple of hours. During which I didn’t receive a single drop item (neither new nor old), so I don’t have any firsthand insight into the new weapons yet.
On the other hand I have been on the receiving end quite a few times. Either Direct Hit is easier than expected or some people have taken to it quite naturally.
I saw the Buff Banner in action a few times (and already hate the fucking bugle sound people apparently can’t refrain from making during setup time). Teamplay-wise this might probably be the most valuable addition to the game and I’m looking forward to see this used strategically in the future.
I have been slaughtered by the Equilizer a few times, but then again rubbish me gets killed a lot by melee weapon, giving my opponents some sweet feelings of glee and superiority.
I don’t think anybody I played with had the Scottish Resistance already, and I only saw once a player with the Eyelander (in fact was decapitated by it), so now conclusive experiences there.
The fact that the server (my usual stomping place, the excellent server of clan WDG) had a lot more people playing soldier than demo was quite telling.
We also played both new maps.
Gorge was much bigger than I expected and played actually quite well. It’s basically Dustbowl with only one stage, but bigger and with a lot more routes. I hope the wide open design will help to make it feel less spammy than Dustbowl.
Doublecross left me with some mixed feelings. It looks nice; nighttime is a welcome change of scenery and I really like the vertical structure of the bases.
Still I found the bases slightly confusing and the vertical design led to some seemingly dead ends (places you can only jump down, but when you enter the room from below you don’t see that immediately). This definitely needs more playing time to make up my mind.
