Okay, I realize that I’m a bit unfair in my harsh judgement. I know that a random assortment of people on a pub server will never display much teamwork and tactical proceeding will always be rudimentary at best. It’s a pub game, after all.
But I dare to say the percentage of really new and inexperienced players is relatively low these days on the pubs, even with TF2 having opened up to Macs recently. So most people will have indeed some (though varying) knowledge of the maps and the game.
Let me rephrase that:
In most cases people have played Dustbowl dozens or even hundreds of times. Same with Badwater. Goldrush. Granary. Chances are they know every nook and cranny on bloody 2Fort. By now people should know what works on those maps and what not. Which classes might be useful, or even bloody needed!
What tactics promise success and which have written FAILURE all over them.
I know there are a few buts and whys to this discussion. Sometimes it’s legit to try some unusual tactic or to try to surprise the other team. But let’s face it, in most cases it’s simple stupidity.
Or a set of flawed priorities. Sometimes it’s difficult to tell if the player proceeding overly carefully is playing smart or simply protecting his kpd. Some people would rather have their team lose than risk their precious score. That’s just a different kind of stupidity ...
It’s the inevitable truth of online gaming: Its biggest pleasure is playing with other people. Its biggest annoyance: Playing with other people.
