Or perhaps even a „welcome back“ to all those old-timers and relics from the days of old, where Scouts would jump on concussion grenades and you stole a flag rather than a briefcase It’ been quite some time. Some things have changed. Other things have stayed the same.
But for those who are here for the first time allow me to introduce the Fort:
The Fort looks back on a long history, reaching back to the days of Quake Team Fortress (I will tell you about its origin and its history at another time).
But the Fort isn’t another run-of-the-mill game site.
It doesn’t focus on posting the latest news. It doesn’t feature advanced gaming techniques or strategies, so you will not find any tips or tricks here to become a more skilled Demo or Spy (If I’ll address such things it will be from a different angle). It doesn’t concern itself with the clan scene (Most comments will be done with pub games in mind). Nor does this site try to gather a community for discussing their l33tness and to rant and rave. (Though rest assured that I will appreciate every thoughtful comment and all constructive criticism!).
Instead the Fort tries to comment on the game in its different aspects and on the people playing it. It tries to promote the values of Honor, Sportsmanship and Teamplay and will try to scrutinize and criticize the game where it fails to deliver or fully establish the mechanisms to create fair and enjoyable teamplay, or where it falls short of promoting and supporting the appropriate mindset for such a gaming experience.
But in the end the game itself can only do so much. The perfect game can still be affected by people disregarding its rules and logic, or even try to ruin the fun for others with their attitude (on purpose or out of ignorance). In that regard I will try to offer ideas and opinions hoping to generate thoughtful discussions.
At this point I’m the only writer on the Fort. As far as the website is concerned I’m glad to be supported by r007, who took pity on my poor technical skills. He’s my trusty (and very patient) chief engineer . But the Fort is not bound to be a one-man show. I’m open for other people who think they can contribute interesting articles. And if I find people who share the values this site stand for and have a similar mindset I will be happy take them on board.
Until that happens you’re stuck with me. Please note that English is not my native language, so forgive me the occasional odd phrasing and grammatical error. I’m doing the best I can ...
So what will be awaiting you in the next few weeks?
I will tell you a bit more about the history of the Fort. I intend to do a (very late ) review on TF2. I will explain why the Fort chooses to be dedicated to Honor, Sportsmanship and Teamplay and in which way this is relevant to TF2.
After that, we will see. Lots of ground to cover. Lots of issues to address. Lots of idiocy which deserves verbal slapping (sadly my means are limited to that
And hopefully you, my readers, will provide me with more ideas and topics. Feed me!
I toyed with the idea of reviving the Fort almost immediately when TF2 was announced. But I hesitated long, not only because I didn’t quite know how to give it a new home, but mainly because operating the Fort has always been a daunting task. Its history and the excellent people who worked here before and beside me left some big footsteps which I will try my best to fill. But trying I will! Because I think that a place like this can offer ideas, opinions and even values which have the potential to improve the game as an experience equally being fun and fair.
I hope that I can live up to my own expectations and make this a place which warrants frequent visiting.
So stay tuned
